“Do you love Buck?” Chris asks as dad turns to take the plates to the sink. He stumbles a step, then keeps going. “Of course I do,” he answers lightly. And Chris knows he’s misunderstood the question entirely. Chris shakes his head. “No, I mean, do you love Buck?” Dad freezes. He very carefully sets the plates in the sink and turns around to face him, crossing his arms. “What do you mean?” Chris blinks. “It’s okay if you do.” Dads jaw clenches, and his gaze darts away. “Chris—“ “I think he loves you, too.” His gaze snaps back around. “What?” Chris shrugs, pushing his chair back. “Something to think about.” And then he grabs his crutches and stands from the table, smiling brightly at dad, before turning and heading for his room.
