Fics like The Firm

I straighten the sleeves of my new uniform—a stiff but slightly oversized black suit jacket with a camisole that sits a little lower on my chest than I’d like and matching black slacks, with a pair of black stilettos in my soft leather bag for when I get to the office. One of Mira’s old suit jackets, because I couldn’t bring myself to go out and buy my own. Because this is not where I was supposed to be going today. While mom had prepared Mira and Brennan for a career in big law—at the massive international firm that bears her name—I’d tagged along with dad since grade school, learning how to help the city’s poor. I’d planned a career in nonprofit work, just as dad had, and had just started my bachelor’s degree in social work so that I’d be better prepared. I’d intended to spend summers as a legal assistant at various nonprofits during undergrad, then law school here in the Bay. But then Brennan had some sort of breakdown and disappeared, and everything fell apart.
