“What is your purpose in denigrating me?” asked Spock. The other man raised an eyebrow. “You may believe me or not, but I wish to help you. You are, after all, me, though a different incarnation of the same excellent qualities. It would be gratifying to send you back to your universe…improved.” Spock lifted his chin. “A transformation into you would not be an improvement.” “And yet, I have dominated you since you entered my room,” purred the duplicate, serenely. “You are uncomfortable. Maybe even afraid.” “Fear is an emotion,” said Spock. “That is as good as a confession, from you,” said his counterpart. “You fear me, maybe even envy me. I don’t know how things are in your universe, but I cannot imagine additional confidence would not be useful.” His hand trailed down the rank stripes on Spock’s sleeve. “I am first officer. You are not. But you could be.”
