Fics like Happy Birthday

Have you ever wondered what happened after Barba's video call to Benson in season 21, episode 13? Did they ever have that dinner? Well, Barba's name comes up in episode 17 of that season, implying that Olivia had indeed recently spoken to Rafael. So here is my imagining of how that might have happened. Much of this is going on in 2020-21, so my imaginings include not just canon for the show, but the facts of what was going on in the U.S. and the world in that year. This is the first of a series of fics in which I attempt to fill in questions left open and threads left hanging. If there's an unresolved issue you'd like me to address, mention it in the comments please. EDITING TO ADD: Writing the first few chapters of this made me realize that I should extend this to fill in the gaps between all of Barba’s appearances after Undiscovered Country (S.19,E.13). In each appearance other than his final one (or at least final as of mid-season 26), something is said that indicates or at least implies that Barba and Benson have been in touch since the last appearance. And there’s a few comments that bear explaining. So I’m going to take this through Last Call at Forlini’s.
