Fics like The Bucks in the Boat

John pulls out his zippo lighter and unsuccessfully flicks it, finger missing the flint wheel rivet several times. Growling, he takes the cigarette out of his mouth and glares at Brady. “Do I look like a damn sailor? We’re trained to fly up in the air, not row row row gently down the stream.” “We’re not pilots anymore,” Brady snaps, “Not right now, anyway. You can’t keep living in Crosby’s car." -- The Boys in the Boat Fusion AU — John goes back to school after the war, aimless and haunted by ghosts. He ends up joining the rowing team where he meets Gale Cleven, and finds a new purpose.
