Fics like "I Made Him a Lieutenant," or "Thanks, Kitten"

Why was it Johnny Cooper who Paddy Mayne chose to field-commission to lieutenant in Italy? After all, Cooper was still one of the very youngest members of the SAS. Johnny didn’t think Paddy had promoted him solely to irritate Colonel Bill Stirling. But Johnny couldn’t entirely rule out that possibility, either. He could even see the appeal. Johnny had found it darn near as amusing as Paddy, how flabbergasted Bill Stirling was at Paddy’s choice. In the course of trying to puzzle out Paddy’s reasoning, Johnny reflected on how he had first gotten all three of his commanding officers – David Stirling, Jock Lewes, and Paddy Mayne - to see him as an asset to the SAS, despite his age. Which also prompted Johnny to remember how swiftly and abruptly he'd gone from loathing everything about Reg Seekings, to becoming best friends with him.
