“So... you’re a transfer student?” Jayce ventures, trying to fill the silence. Viktor shakes his head. “Exchange student. From The Czech Republic. I was in a dorm, but the elevator is broken more than it works. Housing made arrangements.” He sets his suitcase down and adjusts his cane, his movements precise but clearly strained. “Right,” Jayce says, feeling a flicker of guilt for his earlier irritation. “Well, uh, welcome, I guess. Your room’s down the hall on the left.” Viktor doesn’t respond, already moving toward the hallway without waiting for further instructions. Jayce watches him disappear into the room, the door clicking shut behind him. He flops back onto the couch, grabbing his phone to text Caitlyn again: Jayce: He hates me already. Caitlyn: Don’t so be dramatic. Give it time. Maybe bake him cookies or something. Jayce: He doesn’t seem like a cookie guy. More like... brooding and vaguely annoyed at my existence. Caitlyn: Perfect. You’re great at brooding and vaguely annoying. 😘
