Fics like The Heart of the Desert

At the bottom of the hill, Cor spies an overturned wagon, its contents spilled across the dirt road beyond. A pair of panicked chocobos fight against their tethers, and a woman lays face down in the gully. The back of her dress is dark with blood. Somewhere, a child is sobbing. Darkness is approaching fast and Cor weighs the danger of what lurks after nightfall against his sense of duty. In the end, it’s not even a choice. He will do what is right, as he always does. *** Or, Cor acquires a toddler. Cid bullies him into keeping it.
