Lucy followed the Ghoul out of that shell-struck old observatory and through the ruins of things lost so many times over by this point it was a miracle anyone was around who could still put a name to them. Idly, she figured, he might be the only one left around here who could. So maybe that was why she had thrown her lot in with his without much thought about it. Or maybe it was because she figured he, at least, would be upfront with her if he ever decided to throw her to the wolves. Or maybe, for the briefest of seconds, she had looked at him and thought, wildly, impossibly, that they might be on the same page. Or in the same boat, rather, one without any oars, and which was pitching dangerously. Or maybe it was something else. Something lesser known. Something like fate, like a little whisper spoken so quietly she didn’t even know she had heard it. But she was listening, now, and the best thing she could do, she figured, was see this through to the end. The Ghoul walked ahead, having similar internal dilemmas unbeknownst, albeit with significantly more swearing.
