Fics like The Weight of You

Two scenes set years apart: Seven years passed between the end of the One Year War and the beginning of the Gryps War. In outer space, those are years of conflict that see the creation of the AEUG and the rise of a Lieutenant Quattro Bajeena. But down on Earth, trapped within her gravity, Amuro Ray's life has shrunk to fit the confines of a comfortable house and grounds. Empty days bleed into emptier nights where Amuro can't escape the ghost of a man who was never his and never will be. Years later, Amuro has teamed up with Hayato and the rest of Karaba to fight back against the Titans. Char has left for space, only returning to Earth to give a speech before the hostage Federation Parliament. A shared celebratory whiskey afterwards is dangerous, especially when Amuro is still haunted by the years he spent under house arrest with only Char's ghost for company.
