Sooin tracked the progress of Anna’s world tour on a creased atlas tacked to her wall, in stamp-sized articles in the newspapers that slowly grew to fill the page. She filled her missing with grainy pictures of Anna with a mic at her lips and the stage lights reflected in her eyes, and Sooin wanted her with a ferocity stronger than ever. The way Sooin lights up with relief is worth everything, Anna thinks, worth the two lonely years on the road, the piercing glare of stagelights and days spent missing warmth; as well as the decade before that when loving Sooin was only a dream. She imagines them meeting in New York, her hotel lobby, Sooin’s beloved face turning towards Anna as she rises from the couch; on the street, Sooin’s eyes narrowed with determination as she searches relentlessly; at one of Anna’s concerts, a familiar face in the adoring audience that makes her forget a lyric, trip over teetering heels. There are so many firsts in their future that it’s kind of dizzying. Anna never dared to dream of this, never allowed herself to expect anything. But now Sooin’s standing right before her, near enough to get addicted to this warmth, Anna can’t stop herself from wanting.
