"You haven't owned a human in a while," is a comment Canticle gets a lot these days. "I wasn't aware that pet ownership was a requirement for being happy," is his usual reply. But if he's honest, the real reason is that he's just... picky. Slave-bred humans are docile and boring, and there's a sameness to their look he finds dreadfully dull. Which means that if he wants a slave, he needs to get it from the slums. Being beautiful in the slums is a dangerous thing, and the gems go to lengths to hide themselves. Diamonds in the rough certainly exist, but finding one takes... effort. At least, it usually does. Until a human who owes Canticle a substantive debt says, "I know an uncut gem. A real looker. Green eyes. Rare breed." Lacing his fingers together, Canticle leans forward. "I'm listening."
