“I should probably go,” Buck says. Lightning flashes in the window behind him— brilliant, fleeting, dangerous. The sky, in response, groans with thunder. “Stay,” Eddie urges. “At least until the storm passes.” Something comes over Buck’s face for a moment. Reluctance telegraphed by the furrow of his brow; sadness resting in the downward corners of his mouth. Eddie sees the exact moment Buck concedes. That’s the worst part about breaking up with someone you know better than yourself, he thinks. Neither of them can hide from the other. Two weeks after Eddie breaks up with Buck, a storm traps the two of them together. (Written for 9-1-1 Gotcha for Gaza.)
