Fics like Poetry and the Public Good [Essay]

Poets tend to lapse into propaganda and polemic when they try too hard to “make something happen,” as Auden warned us. Yet it is a good dream, for poetry to serve the civic good in some direct way...” - Lucia Perillo Poetry serving the public good doesn’t have to remain a dream, but we must acknowledge that while there are people who are excellent at poetry because they are expressive, many of those who are excellent at poetry dwell in it. Poetry symbolizes to them a great escape from reality. it is fashionable now to praise Sylvia Plath (a famous suicide) and bell hooks (famously an incel for much of her life) over the likes of Shakespeare (a successful businessman, and a dead white male.) But as for what actually works and can be made to work for society, Shakespeare would be far more likely to have accurate insights in his time than Plath or hooks had in theirs. Simply put, he engaged with the ugliness of reality and made it work.
