Fics like The Deeds That Go Unheralded

Jay wasn’t a complicated guy. He was dedicated to his crew and would do anything to help build their vision of the future. After the fall of the barrier and transitioning into college, perhaps he didn’t play as much of a part in that big picture as the others did, but he liked to think that he helped in his own way – all while protecting Mal’s reputation and maintaining the assets that made him valuable. He’s used to grunt work, so when Mal asked him to start hanging out with Ben when she was too tired to or just needed some private Evie time, Jay didn’t mind it. After all, anyone claimed by his crew was crew in turn – it didn’t have to be more complicated than that. It wasn’t a hard thing to do, so it was unlikely Jay would mess it up. He could be kind of dumb though. ALSO KNOWN AS: That time Jay works through his Isle conditioning in a world where it was no longer needed; learned how to analyze and establish boundaries and connect to people in a way that had never been expected or encouraged of him before. It was really hard. But also really worth it.
