“It’s unfortunate that Bruno’s insidious ways have infected this family, even now. But, Mirabel, we know that you can prove to us that it hasn’t reached you. That you can prove to us that you are in this family.” She lifts her hand to caress Mirabel’s cheek and roots her to the ground as irritation rumbles within her. What has she been doing all this time? Besides trying to prove time and time again that she is in this family? That she cares about them? Her chest burns from frustration. Her whole body feels ignite with rage and she’s almost surprised that Abuela can’t literally feel the heat from her palm on her cheek. She hears Bruno’s words echo around in her head again, I love our family, but it’s a lot to be in it, and feels their weight even stronger now, but she takes a deep breath. She knows she would never do anything to hurt this family. If this is the proof they need, that she stop the prophecy from coming true, then she’ll give it to them. “I will, Abuela.” She declares. “I’ll show you. I’ll show everyone.” Her eyes stare directly into Abuela’s, a challenge issued.
