“You have to.” The woman continues more urgently, past the scratchiness of her voice, “You’re not safe here.” “Why?” Slips out before Mirabel can draw the conclusion on her own. “Isn’t it obvious!?” The prisoner shouts, exasperated, as she thrusts herself forward, but not past the limits of the chains, before she slumps to the ground. The frostiness radiating from her clues Mirabel in. “You have a Gift.” She releases what was meant to stay in her mind, and the pale woman’s face scrunches up in anguish. “'A gift'?” She repeats with a humorless laugh. “It’s a curse.” The last word has enough venom to make Mirabel take a step back, to make all the words she’d plan to say get lodged in her throat. A pained expression flashes across the woman’s face before there’s resignation. She retreats further into herself like she thinks Mirabel will leave… but Mirabel’s never been a quitter. --OR-- Mirabel finally gets her Gift, but her door leads to somewhere, and someone, unexpected.
