Fics like let the sky fall

There is a single wavering moment in which it is just the three of them - Chani, Paul and his betrothed. As the world around her shakes and blurs, she looks into the eyes of the only boy she’s ever loved and she knows. She knows that there is no going back, not for him or her. She knows that she lost him the moment they crossed the storm. Chani knows in the way she knew her mother was dead, that Paul is lost to her. (His dreams turned reality, except she cannot draw him from his nightmares, from his sobs and cracking voice, from the hollowness in his eyes. He is gone. He is gone.) But her people are alive, and she has never been fighting for this devastatingly lovely boy. So Chani falls to her knees, slowly and steadily, and when she lowers her head, it feels like the end of everything. - (In which Chani’s mother taught her that there was no shame in surviving in whatever way you could. Or Chani bends the knee to Paul and plays the long game for her people.)
