The heat is overwhelming once back in the car, but Kevin bears it only for the shivering form in the backseat. He keeps an eye on him, glancing into the rearview as often as he can while maintaining safety as he drives, but Peralta never notices. Raymond's coat is almost comically large on him—the sleeves hanging over his palms and the shoulders too wide for the young man's smaller frame. It would be reminiscent of a little boy playing dress up in his dad's clothing if it weren't for the fact that Peralta is not only an adult, but one that they had found near frozen on a bench in the middle of the night. His head is down, wet hair dripping rivulets onto his face, and his arms are wrapped tightly around his body like a lonely hug. It's such a pitiful sight that Kevin feels something inside of him crack. Raymond's hand, still a little cold from being outside, slips into his and squeezes. “You know,” Peralta's voice cuts through the silence of the car, “my dad showed up again.” Or Jake's dad returns and causes an upheaval in his life that no one is sure he can come back from.
