Buck rocks the crying baby in his arms, tears gathering in his own eyes. Every hiccuping sob is like a knife to his heart. The loft is dark and still around him, the creaking of the glider and Carter’s cries the only sounds. His neighbors must hate him right now, in this nebulous time after midnight and before dawn. He can’t do this. This was— He can’t do this. Holding Carter against his shoulder, he fumbles his phone out of the pocket of his sweats and swipes it on, going to his contacts. It rings for what feels like an hour before Maddie picks up. “Buck? What—” “I shouldn’t have done this,” he interrupts, the guilt of calling her in the middle of the night washing away in the relief of hearing her voice. “Maddie, I shouldn’t have done this.” He’s aware of his growing hysteria but lacks the energy to tamp it down. OR: Buck feels overwhelmed after deciding to foster a baby boy. Luckily, he has Maddie--and Eddie--to help him out.
