Fics like and the stars, like a loved one

“These wings are your lives.” Cody watches with a keen eye, same as any other training exercise— the way Seventeen arranges and slots any wayward feathers back into place, carefully realigning the barbules, removing any molted feathers trapped between the various layers. “They will save your lives, but only if they’re properly maintained for optimal flight. And unlike a blaster, broken and useless ones cannot be tossed out and replaced… ” Alpha-17 turns and gives the lot of them one of his most severe looks. Cody looks up and meets it, unwavering. “Not without replacing the entire unit. So don’t give them a reason to.” Or: Cody, his wings, and carving out comfort in the middle of a war.
