Poppy sits across from Branch. His head droops with exhaustion and his hair is hanging down, and he doesn’t want to let anyone touch him because he’s hurt all over, and it’s kinda terrifying. The sort of terrifying that lives in a pit in your stomach, creeping and growing no matter how hard you try to push it down and reassure yourself. But he looks up at her and smiles, tired but bright and beautiful and breathtaking, and Poppy can’t do anything but smile back. Elation fills her chest, and it doesn’t drown out the fear and anger and worry, but it makes a space for hope. She offers a paw and Branch intertwines his fingers with hers, ever so lightly. They take a few minutes there in the quiet, dark safety of the servants quarters. Things are going to be okay. Poppy going to make them okay. ------------- (Inspired by "You're Half Of Me Now" by localamblongus. i think their fic possessed me and this was born)
