Alone on Halloween, after his husband ditches him for a party in the Village, Kurt decides to soothe himself by performing a spell, just as a coping mechanism. He doesn't actual believe he can travel back in time and change his past, but what would it hurt to give it a shot? Based on the Kurtoberfest prompt 'magic/spells', and inspired by a prompt that I got long ago for a story where Kurt goes back in time as The Doctor to talk himself out of meeting Blaine.
