Fics like only feel it when it's lost (getting through still has its cost)

"Nico knew their peace wasn’t built to last; the prophecy’s twelve-fold rerun assured that. There was no way he could escape this quest, no way he could bundle up at Camp for the winter and hide away with Will. Tartarus had clung to Nico ever since he left, and it was only a matter of time before it called him back down again. Nico never anticipated bringing his soulmate with him. He wanted so badly for Will to stay behind. There could not be a person more unsuited for Tartarus, Nico thought. He was too bright, too loving, too gentle. The god would grind him into dust like the souls in the Acheron." *** AU where the worst things your soulmate believes about themselves show up on your skin. After their trip to Tartarus, Nico and Will are left to pick up the pieces of each other.
