"Are you and your friend here on a pilgrimage?" One cannot walk three steps in Rome without bumping into a piece of saint. The inn that they're staying at now makes its business off tired and hungry pilgrims hoping for a place to rest. Diarmuid says, "No, we're just traveling. We came through Genoa, and then Tuscany, and now we are here, and soon we will see the kingdom of Sicily." "Surely you want to see Venice as well?" asks Neri. The answer comes not from Diarmuid but from his massive companion, in a deep, rumbling growl, "No. We don't." Bertram gasps in mock surprise. "Ah, so you do speak." The soldier says, "Occasionally," and he and Diarmuid share amused glances. --- Post-canon, outsider POV. A group of travelers share a meal.
