Fics like L'envol, or: Waltz for Two Wings

“Oh, Oscar!” Charlotte cried. She stood up only to fall at his feet, her face pressed to his hands as she wept. “Lady Charlotte! What’s wrong?” Oscar said. “Oh, I don’t want to marry, Oscar! I don’t want to marry the duke de Guise! I thought I would marry in a few years, when I found someone who I loved and who loved me back!” she cried. “I thought,” she said softer then, her sobs strangling her, “I thought that I would marry someone as kind and beautiful and noble as you.” She felt his hands clasp hers at those words. “Lady Charlotte, please, I beg of you; please, stand up.” When she did and she looked up at him, his face was so sorrowful that her child’s heart loved him the most in that moment.
