Healing isn't a linear process, old habits die hard, and sometimes it gets worse before it gets better. But with a little patience, and effort, and strategic Floor Time, Ed and Stede will find their way. ----- Stede stops beside him, hand on the small of Ed’s back, and Ed leans into the touch, offers his cheek when he feels Stede leaning in. It’s such a tiny gesture, that buss on his beard, but Ed can’t actually remember the last time anyone thought to do it. Stede has softened Ed; Ed has allowed himself to be softened. A year ago, if someone had told Ed he would be thinking about raising chickens, he’d have laughed himself to an early grave. Then again, a year ago, Ed expected to find himself on the wrong end of a cannon sooner or later, gone out the way of Calico Jack. Now he’s here, in a home he’s going to build with the man he loves beyond all reason, with nothing more pressing than how to fix a leaky roof or where to acquire a set of furniture not bitten with dry rot. There are many things Ed wishes he’d done differently, but there are an equal number he wouldn’t change because they all led him here, to this kitchen on a sleepy morning, Stede’s warmth at his side.
