Fics like We Regret to Inform you-

Life was a lot easier when you and Simon were just stupid Grad Students, dreaming what life would be after you got your degrees. Life was easier when plans didn't include a two year gap in your studies, spent working minimum wage and desperately applying for programs your friends seemed to breeze into. Life was a lot easier before you lost half a millennia of time, too. Life was so much easier before you stumbled into that same stupid Grad Student, now a doctor, Antiquarian, and a tortured old man...maybe you could help make his life a little bit easier. Help things make sense when they hadn't for a very, very long time. Or: Simon and the reader are college buddies who grew apart, only to both miraculously survive and grow closer after he's freed from the crown. This happens instead of the events of Fionna and Cake! So while there might be references to events from the series, essentially the reader intercepts Simon before he can do anything too drastic.
