“How many times, Sterling,” Eliot heard Nate speaking. “We are not friends. You cannot just stop by to say hello.” “And I’m not,” Sterling stopped just at the last step, probably subconsciously trying to keep the higher ground, the advantage above Nate. Eliot felt Nate’s hand go tighter on his arm, stopping him from lunging forward. “Wouldn’t be here at all if it weren’t for one…Specific thing.” He held up a folder. “Your sort of job, I think. Or rather, the sort of job you would be very good at.” He stepped down the final stair, keeping eye contact with Nate. “Wouldn’t be here at all if I could do this one myself.” He intercepted the folder before Sterling could hand it off to Nate, holding it just long enough to be able to tell it wasn’t heavier than it was supposed to be. When Eliot handed it to Nate, the mastermind took it with a slight nod. “What’s the job, then?” Nate opened the folder, shuffling through the papers. “Missing persons,” Sterling’s posture was stiff, his hands hidden in the pockets of his slacks. “Wouldn’t bother you about it if I could manage this one on my own.”
