Buck is used to loss. He never really had his parents, which is a different kind of very unfortunate loss. Maddie left with Doug. Buck himself came and went from various places, jobs and friendly people. He lost himself after a ladder truck crushed his leg. His triumphant return to a regular life slipped through his fingers when he almost choked to death on his own blood. Red came and went so fast, Buck has to look up his obituary sometimes to remind himself that he was real. He lost his favorite person ever to unforgiving tsunami waters. And somehow, through all of that, he nearly lost his family. And no, it wasn't because of the lawsuit. But he'll never forget the passion in Thomas' tone when he said "you don't find it, son, you make it." And the pain in Red's face when he found out Cindy was "gone" along with his old team after learning she had dementia. Buck will be damned if he stops fighting for his family; or, more importantly, for himself.
