“Gonna be here any day now, huh?” The woman asks. “Hopefully,” Maria says. “I’m about ready for them to vacate the premises already.” “Well they’re gonna be a lucky little thing,” F-something says, smiling. “Already got their whole family here.” She winks at her and Joel, including them in a way Maria absolutely never would. “And I’m sure a couple extra pairs of hands for diaper changes won’t go amiss.” Maria doesn’t respond beyond a meaningless, polite smile, but she doesn’t miss how the woman’s eyes go a little tight. It also hasn’t escaped her that Maria’s yet to say “aunt” and “uncle” about them in reference to the baby the way Tommy does. Maria might not be willing to make a scene by emphasizing that she doesn’t want them in her family, but neither is she interested in playing nice about it when she doesn’t need to. It’s a situation Tess can already see blowing up in all of their faces, and sooner rather than later to judge by the increasing swell of Maria’s belly. (tess decides to do something about their dynamic with maria)
