Fics like Something Awful

Lain was ten when she first felt it. A deep, intangible unease that strangled her chest and never seemed to let go. It followed her as if it was a corset tying itself tighter and tighter, until it was hard to breathe. It was the feeling one got when lost in an abandoned mall or an empty parking lot, and slowly, she came to view her surroundings as equally-alien. Her warm room became a nauseating cage. Her parents' hugs felt like attacks. Her body felt like it belonged to some other girl. Lain screamed into her pillow and cried for weeks on end, until the emptiness settled within her, too. And then, life went on. Her grade changed, her hair shortened, and slowly, her room grew warmer and she could look her parents in the eye without dread. But inside, she knew she had changed. She just learned to smile as the dread choked her insides. She could almost taste the blood on her tongue.
