Fics like I Do Not Live (I Merely Survive)

Harry Potter is a mediocre student. Average, uninteresting, notable only for the scar on his forehead and surviving the impossible. He prefers people to see him that way. He prefers for them to think him lazy and unengaged rather than incapable. Such a realization would raise far too many questions. Harry Potter is a mask. Brash and arrogant, Gryffindor to the core, and so unlike his true self that he seldom recognizes the face staring back at him from the mirror. Red and gold should be silver and green. He’s always known that, no matter how hard he tries to pretend otherwise. But Freak knows the perils of ignoring the expectations placed upon him, no matter how outlandish they may seem. They cannot find out that Freak is freakish even by wizarding standards. They cannot find out why he struggles so badly with spells, and they cannot find out that his magic prefers the form of hissing black shadows that writhe and ache to break free. Freak has always been living on borrowed time, so when he stares into the eyes of a newly resurrected Voldemort, he does not feel fear. Only a distant, numb acceptance. He does not anticipate the searing pain. He does not anticipate the shadows breaking free.
