Fics like Man of Hope
The Asharides are the last of the ancient warrior race that once called Mars home. Their fleet is broken, their war is over, and their dead homeworld hangs in the dark outside their viewports. The only thing alive in this system is the third planet — and the lone human survivor of its first manned mission to Mars. Rafael Martin: French Foreign Legion, mercenary, farmer, astronaut. He has survived more than any one person has a right to. Now he is the only human being aboard an alien warship, the only male in a fleet of warrior women who have never needed one — and somehow, against all logic, he is the most dangerous person in the room. First contact was supposed to be humanity's moment. Nobody asked Raf.
