When he poked his head through the door, he saw that Mass hadn’t started yet, the congregation sitting still in their seats, the priest not yet arriving. Almost apologetically, he sat in the back pew, in the chair nearest to the door. As soon as his feet crossed the threshold, the bell stopped ringing, and the church was still. There wasn’t the usual hurried whisper of gossip, or coughing, or the sound of people shifting to situate themselves, or the wind outside. Not even the sound of a single breath. The door behind him shut with a heavy thud. Ronan Mazurier is back in Paris after a long stint abroad in London, happy to leave behind the trauma of the Revolution with his enemy-turned-husband, Lazare de Peyrol.
