“Here,” Anthony pulls a cigarette out of the carton and hands it to Frank, who accepts it gladly, then takes another one out for himself, “for your troubles.” He lights Frank’s before his own, feeling Frank’s eyes on him as he breathes in, watches the cherry glow to life, still silent. Trying to find the words. They’re both leaning against the cool metal of the bus, but Frank’s turned towards him, hips canted forward. It’s fucking maddening. “So, what’s up, then?” Frank finally asks. “Not gonna ditch you now, ‘cause you let me bum a cig off of you and it’d be an asshole move of me to just leave right after, but, um.” He gestures loosely with his cigarette hand. “What can I do for you?” Anthony exhales slowly, tracks the curl of smoke into the air until it dissipates, then mumbles, “I’m gonna tell you something really fucking crazy and you’re just gonna have to believe me.” (Anthony falls asleep in 2024 next to the love of his life, and wakes up in a world that might as well have been a lifetime ago. The situation is less than ideal.)
