Fics like Sink or Swim (or Reach Out for a Helping Hand)
"Excuse me." Buck doesn't realize he's the one being addressed until the speaker tugs at his t-shirt. He turns and blinks, taking in the lone child in front of him. It's a boy, maybe five, six years old with a bright green, dinosaur-themed t-shirt, a mess of golden curls on his head, and forearm crutches on each arm. "'Scuse me," he repeats, lips pursed like he's weighing Buck up and finding him, so far, wanting. "Are you a firefighter?" or: Nine months into his probationary period, Evan Buckley meets a boy on a pier and survives a tsunami (just barely in that order).
