Fics like I Don't Want to Watch the World End With Someone Else

“I still had the cloth with his blood on it from when I removed the microchip and I ran some tests on it, and I’ve been able to isolate some of the antibodies, but I also discovered a chemical messenger—an altered form of the Flare. It’s mutated in a way that tricks the original virus into believing Thomas is already infected. Which he is—just not in the same way. This strain is benign. It leaves his brain untouched while acting as a shield against further infection. A biological quirk. If we can extract enough of these messengers and successfully replicate them in the lab, we could create not just a cure but a vaccine. A vaccine, Newt!” A dreadful realisation grips Newt’s heart. “But the Flare grows in the brain.” Teresa meets his gaze, her voice steady. “It does.” “Find someone else,” Newt says, the raw edge in his voice betraying his desperation. “There is no one else.” or: me telling you I've seen The Last of Us without telling you I've seen The Last of Us (well, I just told you now, have I?)
