Fics like dénouement

He reaches back to touch Ellie about fifty fucking times in the first hour they drive away from the hospital. He’s careful about where his hand lands, but he needs to rest it over her ribcage, needs to feel the rise and fall beneath his palm, needs the physical, undeniable proof that she’s alive, that she’s okay, that the bloodbath he left behind in that hospital wasn’t for nothing. That he wasn’t too late and too slow for the second chance he never expected to get. (Joel and Ellie in the aftermath)
