Fics like Cheerful Oblivion

While stuck in port for repairs, the crew of esteemed pirate Captain John Price's vessel keep themselves busy with a variety of activities. For one John 'Soap' MacTavish, this includes accepting a contract to hunt down a ferocious sea monster referred to as "The Ghost", which seems to have an insatiable taste for human blood and a horrifying skull face that drives survivors to madness. Soap manages to injure the creature during a storm, but can't quite make the killing blow before it slips back into the abyss from which it came. But when he finds it hiding in a cave to nurse its injuries, he learns that the Ghost is more than just a ravenous, mindless beast, and he has to make an important decision: complete the bounty and get enough gold to cement himself as one of the greatest pirates of all time, or betray his found family and side with a known killer.
