Fics like Always

Despite the pounding of his heart and the thrum of adrenaline in his veins, Soren feels strangely at ease. It’s the same kind of calm that falls over him in the midst of battle, a practiced quieting of the mind that has made him into the level-headed tactician he’s known as today. He lowers himself into a familiar fighting stance when Ike lunges toward him, light as a cat on his feet and just as swift. Stepping out of the way of Ike’s powerful slash is as easy as breathing despite knowing that the training blade Ike always spars with has been replaced with a battle-ready steel sword instead. One misstep, and Soren knows he’ll be dead in an instant, so he hardens his focus down to a single point and drowns out everything else—it’s just him and Ike, locked in a ceaseless dance of blades and magic. It hurts to see Ike stare at him with such bloodlust in his gaze, a look Soren has never seen on him, not even pointed toward an enemy. Come back to me, he wants to say, though he knows it won’t do anything to lessen the curse’s hold. Instead, he takes a breath and taunts, “Is that all you’ve got? Come, Ike, you can do better than that!”
