(She gets sedated before MRIs after that, so she wakes up nauseous and grumpy, but beggars can’t be choosers, and MRI flight risks can’t be vocal about their side effects.) “Say the word,” Joel always says, when he’s rubbing her back or holding her hair out of the way or letting her clutch his hand while they do a spinal tap, “and we’re out of here.” “We’re so close,” she always tells him. “They’ll figure it out soon.” And she believes it, mostly. Primarily because she has to, if she’s going to keep going. (the fireflies don't try to kill her, but ellie still has a Very Bad Time in the hospital)
