Fics like Weigh the Scales and Grind the Stones

“I have been waiting for you, hatchling,” the dragon says. Its voice is a hissing cadence that echoes through the cave. Harry’s eyes go wide. The dragon can speak? Can all dragons speak? Or is it just the ones that live with the goblins? They have to talk to each other somehow, right? “A human horcrux,” the dragon rumbles, looking pleased. “Never before has one graced my hoard. I will take good care of you, young wizard, until my dying day.” Harry worries at his lip before nodding. He’d rather take a dragon than go back to the Dursleys after being gone all this time. They wouldn’t be happy with him, especially with the dirt and mud on his hands and in his hair. At six years old, Harry finds a hole in the ground that leads to a new stage in his life. He meets a goblin, makes a new friend, and finds out that one of the Great Ones has been searching for him. Somehow, an ancient dragon is a better guardian than the Dursleys ever were.
