By the time Fiona is seventeen years old, her mother has been gone for over a year, her father is absent more often than he is not, and she has become the de facto head of the Gallagher household. To be entirely fair, she has always kind of been the one who kept the family going. She has experience with taking care of things. She juggles it all—the kids, the bills, her father—without complaint. She drops out of school, works three jobs, cooks, cleans, keeps everything going. It’s when she’s seventeen, though, that it all comes crashing down. Or: Fiona exhausts herself working to take care of everyone while sick. Her kids turn the tables and take care of her instead.
