Fics like Built Composure

Never before an optimist, the feeling of hope used to be somewhat of a foreign concept for Beatrice. It had always been considered impolite to wish for more than she was given, for she had been taught that greed was a sin against God. Despite this, and against her initial resistance, hope had settled deep in her chest that day, on those steps, some time ago, and never left. It’d festered there — grown, stretched, and spread, like a rash. Hope rooted itself in every fiber of her being, gaining strength even as the time away from Ava lengthened; almost parasitic the way it burrowed so far down into her skin that it reached the innermost part of her. It stuck to her, like sweat, persistent in its very nature. She hoped for Ava every day — and she hated it.
