Fics like a (too few) hundred hearts

Familiarity courses through him like adrenaline as his eyes properly drink in his surroundings. Alastair knows this place. He’s lived, breathed, laughed and cried in this place. He’s had Cordelia tail him and demand his attention in this place. He’s sat at the foot of the trees with lovingly thumbed-through books on botany, architecture and gardening open on his lap in this place. He’s gotten purposefully lost and screamed at the sky, begged Raziel for a sign and kicked at the detritus of leaves and sticks in this place. At the same time, doubt creeps into his lungs, chokes him, rattles him, pushes all his knowledge over the edge of the cliff and into the depths of the abyss below it. Alastair knows this place, and yet doesn’t know it at all.
