Fics like no amount of waiting will make you brave (no amount of fear will keep you safe)

“You didn’t think to check?” Owen spits, venom creeping its way back into his voice. “Didn’t think to come back? Didn’t think that maybe if I were actually dead, that I would want a proper burial?" He pulls on his hair, an involuntary habit that Curt had picked up on years ago. “I would’ve done that for you." “What am I supposed to say?!" Curt yells, surprising both of them. “That I’m sorry?! Well I'm sorry! Of course I am! I’ve spent every day of these last four years being sorry! I drank myself half to death every night because it was the only way I could stop seeing you everywhere!” “Sorry doesn’t change anything.” Owen says, resigned. “It can’t.” “Why can’t it?” Curt pleads. “What can I do to fix things?” Owen pauses. Then, voice weak, he says, “you know, if you had come back, I would’ve told you to leave.” He stares at the floor. “I would’ve told you to save yourself. That I wasn’t worth it.” He laughs bitterly. “And if you had left me there, I would have cried in relief.” Owen’s eyes glaze over. “But you didn’t even try."
