Mrs Harrington loved her son and he loved her right back. She was the isolated wife to a distant man and Steve was her entire world. He followed her around the house like a little duckling, preferred sitting with her as she got ready instead of playing with his toys. There was something so magical about her careful ritual to him. She’d always turn to him, hair done and make-up beautiful and do a little “Tadah!” Steve would smile at her and tell her she looked like a princess. She’d smile back at him and scoop him up in her arms to twirl him around the room. “If I’m a princess, you’re my little prince.” His father told her she shouldn’t encourage him to sit with her. He thought it would make him soft. He was a boy, after all. He told Steve his mother had always wanted a daughter, but he was glad he’d gotten a son. “Plenty of time to turn you into a proper man, son.” A little prince. Or: Steve Harrington, a collection of cracked ribs, black eyes and a bleeding heart.
