Fics like all the little things

Here is the thing that Alex would say, years down the line, if anyone ever asked him. The roots of his rebellion didn’t come from Duke Roger of Conté. They didn’t come through his squiredom, which was dull beyond compare. If anyone asked Alex, Alex would say that his decision to revolt was based on generations of injustice. Alex would say that the coup was him throwing his weight behind a king that wouldn’t wring every last copper out of his people—that while he may have broken his oath of fealty to the Crown, that the Crown had broken theirs first through their extravagant feasts, their unfair tax codes, their policies that reduced his people to poverty and kept them there. He would talk about the loss of his culture, and he would talk about how Duke Roger would have made them free. But it was Delia of Eldorne who pointed out that loyalty to the Crown had never benefited the Hurdiks of the eastern hill country. It was Delia of Eldorne who first said: “This is not fair.” It was Delia of Eldorne who said, “With Duke Roger as king, we will be Hurdiks again, and we will be proud.” It was Delia of Eldorne who said, “We deserve better.” It was Delia of Eldorne who said, “We should revolt.”
