Fics like All Your Mother's Threads

He is on his knees in the mud. The very breath is stolen from his lungs. All he can see is darkness. He sees his father’s face, creased in disappointment as he makes a mistake and the knife he is forging cracks when he quenches it. His mother, pale and drawn and staring out of the window of their house. The night that they ran, all his possessions that he could carry stuffed into a pack as they steal out of the house, tear tracks down his mother’s face as she urges him to run, to run as fast as he can through the twisted trees. The same tears on her cheeks when her head is in his lap, blood staining her chest as his father is wrestled to the ground by guards in shining armour. His father’s wide eyes as he falls. As if he didn’t really expect, until the moment he was pushed, that this was really the end. The wind howls in the abyss below his feet. The rocks crumble and fall, and the edge of the precipice beckons.
